You have no doubt seen it across the news – Lidl GB Ltd has unveiled its sustainable spectacle, a 25ft mural made from over 30,000 bottle tops! The discount retailer teamed up with mural artist Smug and street art programme Yardworks to recreate Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, one of the world’s most famous paintings.
The piece was commissioned by Lidl GB Ltd to celebrate the success of its return scheme pilot – a supermarket first – which launched in February! The scheme was designed to encourage shoppers to play their part in reducing plastic pollution; in return for any eligible piece of plastic that shoppers return to Lidl stores, they will receive a 5pm reward that can be redeemed against their weekly shop or donated to the supermarket’s charity partner, The STV Children’s Appeal.
The supermarket is positive about its plans for the trial scheme and expects it to generate a minimum of 10.5 tonnes of plastic and aluminium waste for recycling monthly. The scheme is already proving a success – in month one, Lidl GB Ltd revealed an overwhelming response to the scheme and reported over 253,000 plastic bottles and aluminium cans had been collected and recycled!
Lidl GB Ltd had a helping hand in the creation of its Renaissance masterpiece and asked Wyndham Resources (UK) Ltd – the UK’s leading provider of sustainable waste management and recycling solutions – to source and supply the bottle tops. Wyndham was able to deliver the 30000 bottle tops to Glasgow for its long-standing client. Julie Pretty, Director of Client Services at Wyndham said:
We were thrilled to be asked to help with this one. Unusual, logistically challenging, and a great highlight for the DRS Scheme which Lidl are leading the way with.
